Open File Report 97-470F is one of a series of continental- scale geologic
maps of the world being published on CD-ROM by the U.S. Geological Survey's
World Energy Project.

Description:
-
Abstract:
-
This coverage includes arcs, polygons and polygon labels that describe
U.S. Geological Survey defined geologic provinces of the Australia and
New Zealand area (Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Tonga and Vanuatu; and
parts of Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands). Each province
has a set of geologic characteristics distinguishing it from surrounding
provinces. These characteristics may include the dominant lithologies,
the age of the strata, and the structural style. Some provinces include
multiple genetically-related basins. Offshore province boundaries are defined
by the 2000 meter bathymetric contour.
-
Purpose:
-
To delineate geologic province boundaries in Open File Report 97-470F Maps
Showing Geology, Geologic Provinces, and Oil and Gas Fields of the Asia
Pacific Region; Plate 3: Australia and New Zealand, which is being compiled
as a small scale geologic reference for the U.S. Geological Survey's World
Energy Project assessment of undiscovered, technically recoverable oil
and gas resources of the world. This coverage is used to produce a map
and an Adobe Acrobat Portable Document of the map, published on CD-ROM.
An Arcview shapefile derived from this coverage is used in an Arcview project
and an ArcExplorer project.

This coverage is a portion of a composite coverage composed of geologic
provinces defined by regional coordinators of the U.S. Geological Survey
World Energy Project and others. Content has been reviewed.
-
Logical_Consistency_Report:
-
Polygon topology is present, each polygon has a unique label point, there
are no dangles, polygons are bounded at extent of coverage. Coverage is
topologically cleaned and built in Arc/Info.
-
Completeness_Report:
-
Geologic provinces are delineated by U.S. Geological Survey World Energy
Project regional coordinators and others with an emphasis on the determination
of petroleum systems. Methods may vary from one region to another.
